The Wayside Ledger
A downloadable game
Your party says "we take the trade road to Kassen," and your prep evaporates. Either nothing happens for the third session running, or you spend twenty minutes stat-blocking a merchant because somebody decided to haggle.
The Wayside Ledger is the page you keep open on travel days. Roll a d20, read the row, keep playing.
WHAT'S INSIDE (8 pages, US Letter)
The Wayside Encounter Table - 20 results on a single page, so you can scan it mid-session without flipping. Every result is either fully statted here or uses a Bestiary array you already own.
Tollmarsh Lurker (CR 3) - a complete ambush predator that lairs under bridges and drags people into the water, with the CR math shown against the official guidelines so you can trust the fight.
Snarewire Trip-Line (CR 2 hazard) - the opening move of a robbery, not a lone trap. Full trigger, effect, Perception and Disable Device DCs.
Wealth-by-level-safe loot tables - Minor (APL 1-2) and Moderate (APL 3-5), capped so a lucky roll doesn't outpace the party's WBL bracket.
Halvard Coin, traveling merchant - a full noncombatant stat block with a 300 gp stock cap that's correct for a 3rd-level expert. Built to recur: rescue him once and he's a permanent discount and a rumor faucet.
The Marsh Mile - a page of setting-agnostic lore and read-aloud text you can rename onto your own river.
A prompt for making more - copy-paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini to generate additional encounters in the same format and power band, with the CR math forced into the output.
WHO THIS IS FOR
GMs running APL 1-5 Pathfinder 1e who keep improvising travel days. Anyone who wants the merchant scene statted before the players start haggling. GMs building an overland campaign who need one road encounter ready every week.
COMPATIBILITY AND PERMISSIONS
Written for Pathfinder 1st Edition. Everything reskins cleanly for any d20 fantasy game - the lurker is a bridge monster, the snarewire is a trap, and Halvard is a man with a cart. Use it all at your table, in your streams, and in your recorded sessions. Please don't resell or repackage it.
Pathfinder is a trademark of Paizo Inc. This is an independent, unaffiliated third-party product.
Also from Bagquest: The Session Zero Toolkit - 14 print-and-play worksheets for campaigns that actually last. If this ledger saves your travel days, that one saves the campaign around them.
